Each requirement is worth a set number of a points, but a player might get bonus points if they meet the requirements on the second floor. These requirements will often require a specific kind of room adjacent to their specific rooms along with specific features. When a player adds a room or feature it is possible they will meet one of the four scoring requirements. Players will also get ghosts for scoring rooms. When players do this they unlock certain special abilities like being able to choose a number on a future roll, or the players can get extra points from ghosts. If a ghost is rolled on a die, then players can either add one feature from the other die or they can fill in ghosts along the ghost track at the bottom. Rooms can be build on the second story as long as room on the second story completely fit on the footprint of the lower level. The features are things like doors, windows, stairs, and room furnishings. So if a 2 and a 4 are rolled the players can make a 2x4 room or a 4x2 room. The numbers on the dice will determine what kind of room the room will be and the numbers will determine the size. They can use the dice to build a room or add features. These boards have a transparent overlay that represents the second floor.Įach turn a player will roll two dice and all players will decide how to use these dice. Each player receives a board that starts with one function room with stairs. A third card is selected that states how points will be scored at the end of the game. At the beginning of the game two score cards are set out that will each show the various room configurations that will score. In this game players are competing to score the most points through completing design requests and collecting ghosts. So did we like how this game is laid out? As fate would have it, shortly after learning we were getting this game my wife and I found ourselves in San Jose with a free day, so we actually visited the Winchester Mystery House before we played the game. While I did not pick it up, we did end up getting this in the Gen Con math trade. Drawing a dice generated house seemed to be an almost natural fit with this theme. We have not played the original Floor Plan, but I knew it was a highly regarded roll and write game. Regardless why it was built a sprawling and unusual house with stairways to no where, doors that open into walls, and mirrored dining rooms is something that I am glad exist in this world.Įarlier this year I was really close to buying this game. Many years later a podcast (maybe American Shadows) clued me in to the truth and how the ghost stories were made up by her neighbors. When I first heard about it I heard it with the ghost story element, where Sarah Winchester build this sprawling never ending house as a way to appease and confuse the spirits of all those killed by a Winchester rifle. I like the weird, quirky, and maybe a little spooky so I have known about the Winchester Mystery House for a long time.
